Severe drought leads to a 42% reduction in durian production in Thailand

Release time:2024-05-15 Reading frequency:236

Thai international economist Aat Pisanwanich recently released a report on Thai durians, pointing out that insufficient precipitation will seriously affect Thai durian exports and suggesting that Vietnam may seize market share in China.

According to the report, the export value of durian from Thailand reached 140 billion baht in 2023, surpassing cassava and bananas, becoming one of Thailand’s main agricultural product exports. However, it is expected that Thai durian exports may decrease in the next five years due to the impact of drought and competition with Vietnam. The recent hot weather has led to a decrease in durian production in Thailand. If the government does not take action, it is expected that durian production in Thailand will decrease by 53% in the next five years.

At the same time, the production of durian in Vietnam has increased by 200% in the past decade, reaching 800000 tons in 2023. Aat predicts that Vietnam’s durian exports to China will reach 500000 tons in 2024, while Thailand’s exports may decrease by nearly 200000 tons to only 800000 tons.
